Eltz Castle

Eltz Castle is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Germany, having remained in the same family for more than 850 years. Unlike the open hilltop fortresses of the Rhine Valley, Eltz is tucked into a forested side valley above the Moselle River, concealed by dense woodland until the last moment of approach. The castle was built in stages between the 12th and 16th centuries by three branches of the Eltz family, each adding its own residential tower. The result is a dense cluster of eight towers with timber-framed upper stories, steep slate roofs, and ornate oriel windows rising from a rocky spur above the Elzbach River. The architectural styles range from Romanesque foundations through Gothic residential sections to late medieval defensive features. The interior is accessible only by guided tour and includes the Knights' Hall with its elaborate fireplace and painted walls, the Elector's Room, the armory, the hunting room, and the fully preserved medieval kitchen. The basement vaults house one of Germany's most important private treasure chambers, displaying gold and silverwork, jewelry, porcelain, and weapons accumulated by the family over centuries. The grounds include an inner courtyard, a chapel, and walking trails through the surrounding forest. The castle is open daily from late March through early November, with guided tours in German and English. Parking is available at the base of the valley, with a 15-minute forest walk or a shuttle bus leading up to the castle. Eltz is located roughly equidistant between Koblenz and Trier, and pairs naturally with the Moselle wine villages, Cochem Castle, and the Marksburg above the Rhine.
