Löwenburg Castle

Lowenburg Castle is one of Germany's most remarkable Romantic follies a deliberately constructed medieval-style knights castle built between 1793 and 1801 for Landgrave Wilhelm IX of Hesse-Kassel. Designed by Heinrich Christoph Jussow, the same architect who built the Hercules monument and the water features in Bergpark Wilhelmshohe, the castle was conceived as an idealised medieval residence where the Landgrave could retreat from court life. From the outside it appears authentically medieval: a steeply pitched site with a gatehouse, outer bailey, drawbridge, keep, towers, curtain walls, and a lower courtyard. Jussow incorporated genuine medieval architectural fragments alongside newly carved Gothic elements. The contrast between exterior and interior is one of the defining features the outside is a rugged fortress, but the inside is a comfortable neo-Gothic residence with heated rooms, glass windows, and period furnishings. The main rooms include the Armoury with a collection of historic weapons, the Gothic Hall with stained glass, the Banqueting Hall, the Chapel with medieval altar pieces, and the living quarters. Lowenburg sits within the UNESCO-listed Bergpark Wilhelmshohe on a hill overlooking Kassel, pairing with the Hercules Monument and the parks famous water features.
