Ludwigsburg Palace

Ludwigsburg Palace, built between 1704 and 1733 for Duke Eberhard Ludwig of Württemberg, is one of the largest fully preserved Baroque palace complexes in Europe. With 452 rooms spread across eighteen interconnected buildings, the palace was designed as a Württemberg Versailles to project the dukes absolutist ambition. The main facade stretches 300 metres across the vast courtyard, with the corps de logis flanked by a series of colonnaded courts. The interiors cover three architectural periods: Baroque state apartments, late Rococo rooms added under Duke Carl Eugen, and Neoclassical interiors from the reign of King Frederick I. The Ordenssaal with its stucco work and allegorical ceiling frescoes, the Ancestral Gallery lined with portraits of the Württemberg dynasty, and the richly appointed Audience Chamber are highlights. The palace park extends over 50 hectares with French Baroque parterres, English landscape sections, and the Marchengarten fairytale garden added for King William Is children. The Palace Church, the theatre, and the gardens are open year-round. Ludwigsburg is a 20-minute S-Bahn ride from Stuttgart.
